The category dis/ability as research tool. Body norms in arts and aesthetics of the long 19th century and the present

In my current research project I am investigating the theoretical, methodological and structural implications of the judgement of bodies deviating from norms in arts and aesthetics of the long 19th century and the present. The simultaneity of normative codification as well as critical questioning of bodily appearances in contemporary visual culture forms the starting point for this project. With the focus on corporeality, I am asking how norms can become fixed, but also how they can change. Using the category of dis/ability, the relationship between norm and deviation of corporeality is dynamized in a historical dimension.
